Separate Sciences

EXAM BOARD: EDEXCEL 9-1

HEAD OF SCIENCE: Mrs Marshall

KS4 CO-ORDINATOR: Mr Clayton

STAFF: Mrs Gardner, Mrs Darron, Mrs Dawson, Mrs Clark, Mr Quilliam, Mr Klimach, Mr Lillywhite, Mr Miller, Mrs Miller, Mr Molyneux, Miss Morris, Mrs Shelton, Mr Taylor, Miss Williams

Students will study each of the three Science disciplines separately: Biology (1BI0), Chemistry (1CH0) and Physics (1PH0). They will receive an individual grade ranging from 9-1 based on their performance in each discipline. Students must study all three disciplines for the entirety of the course. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the principles of each subject, through a mix of theoretical and practical studies, whilst also developing an understanding of the scientific skills essential for further study. It is a triple award course, earning three separate GCSE grades.

At Key Stage 3 students have been learning how science is studied and practised, and that the results of scientific research can have good and bad effects on individuals, communities and the environment.

This syllabus focuses on the individual sciences and should be considered if students wish to study sciences at A Level and beyond, including Medicine or Veterinary Science at university. Although students may be entered for core or supplementary level exams, it is envisaged that all students opting to take the triple science award will be entered for the supplementary level exams. This will provide access to the highest grades. As a result, there is a minimum entry requirement. Students opting for this course will have nine science lessons a week and will sit the examinations in May of Year 11.
