Personal, Social Health Education

HEAD OF PSHE: Miss Wood

Taught mainly by tutors, with help from visiting speakers, plus drop-down days, the course is intended to enable students to develop into healthy, well-rounded and responsible adults. They are encouraged to participate fully and discuss, reflect on and form their own opinions and views.

Key aims:

  • Develop confidence and responsibility.

  • Develop a healthier, safer lifestyle.

  • Develop good relationships and respect differences.

  • Acquire knowledge and understanding about becoming informed citizens.

  • Develop skills of enquiry and communication.

  • Inspire young people about their future prospects and equip students with the employability and study skills they need to succeed beyond school life.

Health and wellbeing:

Maintaining physical, mental and emotional health, including sexual health, managing risks to health and using social media responsibly.

Relationships:

Developing healthy relationships, managing emotions, understanding consent, respecting equality, staying safe online, making informed, safe choices. This follows the DESC’s Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) Advisory Curriculum.

Living in the wider world:

Becoming active citizens, making informed choices, developing employability skills via access to good-quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities, understanding Manx citizenship, managing finances and preparing for exams.

Useful resources:

All student resources can be found in our online Google Classrooms so parents can use these to promote positive conversations around topics being discussed in school. Parents may discuss current issues and items from television/ newspapers; this may help your child to feel more informed.

PSHE lessons take place during two tutorial sessions each week, and as part of personal responsibility, students should have all the necessary equipment needed for the day. This includes student planner, smart card, stationery, specialist equipment needed for lessons and a bag to store these in.

ASSESSMENT:

There is no formal assessment, however progress is observed over the course of a lesson or series of lessons. Endpoint activities will be used to demonstrate learning, reflecting the breadth of the learning opportunities in the programme of study. Homework is not usually set, although students may be asked to research a particular topic.
