EXAM BOARD: WJEC

HEAD OF MUSIC: Mrs Crossley

Students will: Listen to and learn about music from a wide range of historical periods, develop skills in performing music (both individually and in a group), and develop skills in composing music in a style of their choice. 

 

Students thinking of opting for Music GCSE should note: 30% of the overall GCSE mark is given for performing.  If you play an instrument or can sing, this will be a great advantage.

Unit 1: Performing

Section A: Performing

A minimum of two pieces, one must be an ensemble of at least one minute duration. The other piece(s) may be either solo and/or ensemble.

 

Section B: Programme note

A programme note for ONE of the pieces performed.

Unit 2: Composing

Section A:

Two compositions, one of which must be in response to a brief set by WJEC. The second is a free composition for which students set their own brief.

 

Section B: 

An evaluation of the piece composed in response to a brief set by WJEC.

Unit 3: Appraising

Two questions on each of the four areas of study:

  • Musical Forms and Devices

  • Music for Ensemble

  • Film Music

  • Popular Music

ASSESSMENT:

UNIT 1: PERFORMING

Section A: Performing - 30%. Section B: Programme note - 5%.

4 - 6 minutes.

UNIT 2: COMPOSING

35%

6 minutes.

UNIT 3: APPRAISING

1 hour listening exam.
