Product Design
EXAM BOARD: WJEC
HEAD OF DT: Mr Crilly
STAFF: Mr Crilly, Mr Taylor
This course has been successfully introduced to appeal to the ‘IKEA’ generation. It combines the practical elements of manufacturing products in resistant materials with the flair of graphics, enabling students to design and manufacture high quality products of a commercial nature.
Year 10 is structured into mini materials-based practical projects, and then in Year 11 students have the opportunity to design and make a product of their own choosing. There is a 50/50 split between coursework and the examination.
What you will learn:
The use of computer-controlled machines, including laser cutters and 3D printing, is encouraged, where relevant, to produce high-quality work generated through the use of computer aided design software.
Recent projects have included concept products, docking stations, product storage and small items of furniture. A ‘sketchbook’ approach to design work helps the students develop their creativity in line with the design theory which is examined at the end of the course.
