Students began to prepare for their GCSE at the start of Year 9. Regular assessments will continue to track progress during Year 10 and the final examination will be taken in the summer of Year 11. Students will be taught both calculator and non-calculator methods where applicable.

The GCSE specification in Mathematics is designed to enable students to:

Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods, techniques and concepts required for progression into mathematics or mathematically-related disciplines or employment routes.

Examination Board:
Students will follow the WJEC 3300 GCSE, which is the Welsh board qualification. Students are set by ability. Regular reviews take place after formal assessments to ensure that students are studying the correct tier to allow them to meet their potential.
There are 3 tiers of entry:

Higher Tier: Grades A* - C

Intermediate Tier: Grades B - E

Foundation Tier: Grades D – G
ASSESSMENT:
Students are required to sit two units, with each unit being at the same tier. Both papers comprise a number of short and longer questions. Some questions may use multiple choice.
UNIT 1: Non-calculator
Higher – Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes. 80 marks total.
Intermediate – Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes. 80 marks total.
Foundation – Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes. 65 marks total.
