The Cambridge IGCSE First Language English course enables learners to:

  • Develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing

  • Use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation

  • Develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed

  • Develop more general analysis and communication skills such as inference, and the ability to order facts and present opinions effectively.

Writing Objectives:

  • Articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and imagined

  • Organise and structure ideas and opinions for deliberate effect

  • Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate to context

  • Use register appropriate to context

  • Make accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Reading Objectives:

  • Demonstrate understanding of explicit meanings

  • Demonstrate understanding of implicit meanings and attitudes

  • Analyse, evaluate and develop facts, ideas and opinions, using appropriate support from the text

  • Select and use information for specific purposes.
