EXAM BOARD: TCG

HEAD OF MANX: Cathy Clucas

STAFF: To be confirmed

The study of the Manx Language for Teisht Cadjin Gaelgagh (TCG) is a GCSE equivalent accredited by the Isle of Man Government and broadly follows the CCEA Irish Language GCSE specifications. The TCG is considered a GCSE for the purpose of A-level entry requirements in the Isle of Man Schools. The lessons are taught by teachers on the DESC’s Manx Language Service as timetabled lessons in schools. Learning Manx will deepen cultural local knowledge, understanding and connection with the Isle of Man and develops a broad range of transferable skills such as confidence, communication, problem solving and creativity. A Manx TCG will also provide you with a solid foundation for future language study.

A TCG in Manx will enable you to:

  • Develop an understanding, awareness and a positive sense of place and identity.

  • Develop your ability to communicate confidently and coherently with Manx bilingual speakers in speech and writing.

  • Express and develop your own thoughts and ideas spontaneously and fluently.

  • Listen to and understand clearly articulated, standard speech.

  • Deepen your knowledge about how language works and enrich your vocabulary in order for you to increase your independent use and understanding of extended language in a wide range of contexts.

  • Acquire new knowledge, skills and ways of thinking through the ability to understand and respond to a rich range of authentic spoken and written material, including literary texts.

  • Make appropriate links to other areas of the curriculum to enable bilingual and deeper learning.

  • Develop language learning skills related to emerging technologies such as AI while preparing for further language study and use in school, higher education, or in employment.
